Teachers demand payment, threatening to boycott the 2024 General Elections if ignored
The Coalition of Unpaid Teachers and Arrears-Ghana has declared its intention to boycott the December 7, 2024, presidential and parliamentary elections. This decision stems from the government’s failure to pay their monthly salaries and clear the arrears owed for their teaching services.
In an interview, the coalition’s secretary voiced disappointment over the dire financial situation facing teachers, especially given the rising cost of living. “We regret to announce that our members will not participate in the upcoming elections on December 7, 2024. This action is a direct response to the government’s continued neglect of teachers’ concerns regarding unpaid salaries, arrears, and the issuance of staff IDs,” they stated.
The coalition highlighted the hardship faced by many teachers, some of whom have gone nearly a year without pay. This prolonged financial strain has left them and their families in severe economic distress, further exacerbated by the nation’s ongoing economic challenges.
In their statement, the group called on all teachers to stand in solidarity, urging them to join the demand for fair treatment and prompt resolution of their grievances.
