Steps to apply for and activate an MTN eSIM in Ghana

MTN eSIM

The MTN eSIM is a digital alternative to the traditional physical SIM card, integrated directly into a mobile device. This technology enables users to utilize MTN Ghana’s mobile data and network services without needing a physical SIM. A key benefit of the MTN eSIM is the ability to manage multiple SIM profiles or numbers on a single device.

eSIM compatible Phones

To check if your device is eSIM compatible, dial *#06#. You should see a 32-digit Embedded Identity Document (EID) number, which is a unique identifier that allows your device to connect to a service provider without a physical SIM card. If the EID number does not appear, your phone may not support eSIM.

Alternatively, on iOS devices, navigate to Settings > Cellular to find the option to Add eSIM. For Android devices, go to Settings > About Phone and check under Status or SIM status for the option to add an eSIM.

How to activate your MTN eSIM?

After the application processing window, an MTN representative will contact you to verify your details. You will also receive further instructions through your application email.

The email contains instructions on how to activate your MTN eSIM profile on your mobile device and two essential documents:

  1. Installation guide: A step-by-step manual to guide you through the activation process.
  2. QR code: A scannable code that can be used to download a new digital profile on your device.

After you have successfully scanned the QR code, reply “Done Scanning” to the email. MTN will then complete the activation process remotely. Once done, your eSIM will start working.

Should you use an eSIM?

Using an eSIM has many benefits and advantages. Here are a few of them:

  • Convenient: With an eSIM, you no longer have to worry about activating your network with a traditional SIM card. If your mobile device is lost or stolen, you can easily disconnect your profile and reactivate your eSIM on another device.
  • Enhanced security: Unlike traditional SIM cards, eSIMs are embedded into your phone, making them impossible to remove and insert into another phone. This reduces the risk of SIM card theft and loss.
  • Use multiple profiles: eSIM-compatible devices allow you to use many different numbers or network providers on one device simultaneously.
  • Connect to multiple devices: With an eSIM, you can connect to all your devices, including tablets, smartwatches, and smartphones.

On the downside, eSIM services are limited to specific devices. This restriction is an inconvenience if you frequently switch phones. Additionally, when you lose your device or switch to a non-compatible type, you will need to visit an MTN service centre for further assistance.
