In a heart-stopping finale to the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season, Accra Hearts of Oak secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Bechem United, avoiding relegation by the narrowest of margins. Yaw Amakwah Baafi’s 74th-minute goal proved to be the decisive strike, saving the Phobia boys from the brink of relegation and sparking wild celebrations at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The win meant that Accra Great Olympics instead joined Real Tamale United and Bofoakwa Tano as the three relegated clubs in this season’s Ghana Premier League. Accra Hearts of Oak finished the season in 14th place with 45 points from 34 games, just two points clear of the relegation zone.
In a contrasting fortunes, Samartex Football Club celebrated their championship win after a 2-0 victory against Accra Lions in the final game of the season. The victory capped off an impressive campaign for Samartex, who finished the season with 65 points from 34 games.
The dramatic win for Hearts of Oak capped off an intense season, with the team’s fate hanging in the balance until the very end. The Phobia boys can now breathe a sigh of relief, while their fans celebrate a narrow escape from relegation.
“Hearts of Oak’s escape from relegation is a testament to the team’s resilience and determination,” said coach Samuel Boadu. “We knew it would be a tough season, but we fought hard and earned our place in the top flight.”
The win also marked a sweet ending to a tumultuous season for Hearts of Oak, who had faced numerous challenges both on and off the pitch. Despite the odds, the team showed their mettle and secured their place in the Ghana Premier League for another season.
